Named the nut that reduces inflammation in the body
Researchers from China have discovered that one of the key substances found in macadamia nuts is capable of protecting cells from damage and suppressing inflammatory processes. The substance in question is palmitoleic acid, which is the focus of a new scientific study.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Food & Function (F&F), specialists from Jiangnan University conducted a series of laboratory studies to determine how palmitoleic acid affects cellular mechanisms associated with chronic inflammation.
During the experiments, scientists established that this compound helps reduce the level of oxidative stress. This condition occurs when there is an excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species, which can damage cells and tissues, as well as contribute to the development of inflammatory reactions in the body.
In addition, the study showed that palmitoleic acid has a protective effect on lysosomes — important intracellular structures responsible for the disposal of damaged elements. Under the influence of the substance, cells exhibited fewer signs of damage, and the intensity of inflammatory processes decreased noticeably.
According to the Chinese specialists, the compound also affects signaling mechanisms that control cellular defense against stress. It is precisely this, the authors of the study believe, that may explain the previously identified beneficial properties of macadamia, including its positive effect on metabolism and the reduction of the likelihood of developing a number of chronic diseases.
International experts note that the results obtained so far are based exclusively on laboratory tests and require further confirmation in clinical studies. Nevertheless, the work provides a deeper understanding of the biological role of palmitoleic acid and its potential applications in medicine.
Scientists believe that in the future, this substance could become the basis for new methods of prevention and treatment of diseases associated with chronic inflammation. Such conditions include rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus, and various cardiovascular disorders.
