Seismologist warns: Aegean Sea under threat of devastating tsunami

Turkish professor and seismologist Serkan Irmak commented on the series of earthquakes occurring in the Aegean Sea.
According to him, the island of Santorini, located on the coast, is an active volcano.
"One of the reasons for the series of earthquakes is volcanic activity. Before eruption, volcanoes cause micro-earthquakes leading to small faults. This seismic activity is observed in the area of Santorini island, where a powerful eruption occurred in 1600 BC. In the northeast, there is another volcano called Colombo. Such volcanic earthquakes are rare, but we observe them in this region," noted the seismologist.

Serkan Irmak emphasized that consecutive earthquakes create a tsunami threat.
"Considering the previous form of Santorini's eruption, a powerful explosion could cause a tsunami since the Colombo volcano is partially underwater," he said.
"When a tsunami occurs, first there is a sea retreat, then waves come. Coastal residents who observe such signs should immediately head to higher ground," advised the seismologist.
