Scientists discovered the longest case of COVID-19 in Russia
Researchers from the National Research University "Higher School of Economics" (HSE University) and other scientific organizations have identified the longest case of coronavirus infection in a female resident of the Kaluga region of Russia.
This is reported in the journal Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology.
"An international group of researchers with the participation of scientists from HSE University studied an unusual sample of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in an HIV-positive patient," the report states.
During the study of the materials, it was established that the virus, since the infection in 2022, has undergone multiple mutations and evolved in the woman's body.
Through this research, scientists were able to confirm the hypothesis that the virus can remain in the body of some people for several years, gradually accumulate mutations, and then spill over into the population.
In addition, the researchers found that the virus evolved 3-4 times faster than ordinary SARS-CoV-2 strains. Experts found a total of 89 mutations, 33 of which were in the spike protein, including changes characteristic of strains with increased infectivity and resistance to antibodies.
Prior to this, Rospotrebnadzor refuted reports about an unusual virus spreading across Russia. According to the agency, during constant epidemiological monitoring and genomic surveillance, no new atypical pathogens were found in the country.
Specialists reminded that vaccination against influenza remains the most effective measure for prevention and protection against severe forms of the disease.
