Red Lemon: The Rarest Citrus That Grows in Only One Place on Earth and Lives for Just 3 Days
The rarest red lemon, grown in Sicily (Italy), is attracting increasing attention due to its unusual appearance and record-short shelf life.
As reported by BAKU.WS citing foreign media, this citrus fruit, known by its scientific name Citrus limonimedica pigmentata, differs dramatically from ordinary yellow lemons - its peel has a reddish hue, and the flesh is colored pink.
The most striking feature of this fruit is its incredibly rapid spoilage. After ripening, the red lemon stays fresh for only 2-3 days. This is precisely why it is virtually impossible to transport over long distances and bring to the mass market.
According to experts, the red color of the fruit is due to natural pigments - anthocyanins. These are the same substances that give color to grapes, blackberries, and other red berries.
The peel color can range from orange-red to dark red, depending on the climatic conditions and the degree of ripeness of the fruit.
The taste also differs from the usual: the red lemon is less sour and has a slightly sweet aroma compared to regular lemons. Thanks to this, it generates keen interest in fine dining restaurants.
The Sicilian red lemon is used in the preparation of juices, cocktails, desserts, sauces, and herbal teas. Its aromatic peel is especially valued for garnishing dishes and beverages.
Experts note that, despite its limited commercial value due to its short shelf life, the red lemon is rightfully considered one of the rarest and most remarkable citrus fruits in the world.
