German Chancellor Canceled Phone Call with Trump - REASON

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz declined to hold a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump that had been planned for today.

This was reported by The Guardian newspaper.

The publication notes that Merz made this decision after the White House leader had earlier publicly welcomed the victory of the opposition German far-right party "Alternative for Germany" in Saxony-Anhalt.

At the same time, a spokesperson for the chancellor's government declined to answer the question of whether there was indeed a connection between these two aspects. However, he emphasized that Merz had repeatedly spoken out against "interference from outside or commenting on internal political processes, including elections."

Earlier, the US president stated that German populists are on the rise and do not intend to tolerate the country's current migration laws.

"A grand evening was recently had by the populist party in Germany. They are finally tired of the absolutely terrible immigration rules and regulations that have so badly harmed Germany. They are on the rise and are no longer going to put up with it!" he wrote on Truth Social.

"Alternative for Germany" won the regional elections to the Landtag (parliament) of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, which were held on Sunday. According to the regional electoral commission data, AfD received 43.8% of the vote. This is more than double the result from five years ago in this region. However, the party was unable to secure a majority of seats in the Landtag: it holds 39 seats out of 83.

Meanwhile, Friedrich Merz's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) received only 17.2% of the vote, losing nearly half of its support, and obtains 15 seats in the Landtag.
