Mysterious balls discovered on Australian beaches

Unusual gray spheres were found on the coast of the Australian state of New South Wales, reported The Guardian.
"Officials are warning residents not to touch the mysterious spherical balls and to avoid beaches where they appear," the report notes.
Despite the cleanup of beaches conducted by specialists, the connection between these balls and a similar substance found on Sydney's shore in January remains unclear.
According to information from the state's environmental protection agency, E. coli bacteria, fatty acids, and hydrocarbons were found inside the spheres. Analysis also revealed traces of porous volcanic glass in some of these mysterious objects.
It is suggested that the balls could have entered the ocean due to a malfunction in the sewage system. Sydney's wastewater undergoes only "primary" treatment at treatment facilities before being discharged into the sea through "deep-water" outfalls that extend 2 to 4 km from the shore.
Scientists are currently continuing to study these strange findings.
