Mosquito-borne diseases are becoming an increasingly serious problem in Europe

Until recently, diseases transmitted through mosquito bites were considered exclusively a tropical threat. However, in recent years, the situation in Europe has changed dramatically. The cause is climate change, warming, and the growing number of invasive mosquito species capable of carrying dangerous viruses.
One of the most alarming factors has been the spread of the Asian tiger mosquito. This aggressive species is actively colonizing southern and central regions of Europe, including France, Italy, Germany, and now the Balkan countries. It can transmit the viruses of Dengue fever, Chikungunya, Zika, and West Nile.
The number of recorded cases of these diseases is growing each year. For example, cases of Dengue fever are no longer limited to "imported" infections - they are becoming locally acquired. This means that people are getting infected without leaving Europe. In some regions, even small outbreaks of the disease are being recorded.
The West Nile virus is of particular concern. It is transmitted through local mosquito species and has already caused dozens of deaths in recent years. The virus can cause serious complications, including meningitis and encephalitis, especially in elderly people and those with weakened immune systems.
The situation is exacerbated by changes in weather: warm winters and humid summers create ideal conditions for mosquito breeding. In addition, globalization and the increase in international travel contribute to the introduction of new virus strains.
European health services are strengthening surveillance of mosquito spread and diseases, but experts warn: in the coming years, the threat may become even more serious. To reduce the risk, it is important to pay attention to prevention - avoid bites, use repellents, not leave standing water in yards, and monitor the state of the environment.
Mosquitoes are not just a summer inconvenience. In a changing climate, they are becoming a real threat to health, and Europe is already facing the consequences of this challenge.
