In Brazil, more than 60 people died as a result of a shootout between police and a gang
In Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), 64 people were killed as a result of a shootout between police and members of the "Red Command" gang.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to G1, among the dead are four police officers. In addition, 81 people were detained during a major special operation in the favelas in the north of the city.
More than 2,500 law enforcement officers took part in the operation to detain members of the criminal group. Security forces arrived in areas under the gang's control to execute about 100 arrest warrants, but faced fierce resistance.
In response to the raid, drug dealers opened fire and set barricades on fire, which provoked a large-scale shootout. It is also reported that the criminals used drones to drop explosive devices.
This operation is the final stage of an initiative called "Containment," aimed at combating drug trafficking in Rio de Janeiro.
