Scientists from China have made an important discovery in understanding the relationship between mental health and cognitive abilities. According to a study published in the authoritative Journal of Affective Disorders (JAD), depression can significantly accelerate the decline of memory and other cognitive functions, acting through the mechanism of social isolation.

As reported by BAKU.WS, the large-scale study covered data from more than 9,000 participants in the national CHARLS project, who were observed over a period of five years. The results were alarming: people suffering from pronounced symptoms of depression significantly reduce social contacts over time - they communicate less frequently with children, friends and neighbors, and notably decrease participation in public life.

This forced isolation, in turn, becomes a catalyst for deterioration of memory and ability to concentrate. Although researchers estimate that social isolation explains only about three percent of the overall negative impact of depression on cognitive functions, these figures take on serious significance in the context of the aging global population.

The scientific group emphasizes that depressive state works as a chronic stressor, gradually depleting the body's internal resources and suppressing a person's social motivation. As practical recommendations, the authors propose a comprehensive approach: combining traditional treatment of depressive disorders with special programs aimed at strengthening social connections.

Regular communication, active participation in support groups and the use of modern digital interaction formats - these measures, according to researchers, can significantly prolong the preservation of cognitive functions and become an effective prevention of dementia in people suffering from depression.
