The Hidden Cause of Chronic Cough Revealed

Chronic cough is not always caused by lung diseases or infections - in some cases, its cause lies in nervous system malfunctions. This conclusion was reached by researchers from the University of Leicester, University of Copenhagen, and Queen Mary University of London. The research results were published in the European Respiratory Journal (ERJ).
Scientists analyzed nearly 30 thousand cases of chronic cough, combining health information from five international biological databases. They found that people with chronic cough more often have genetic variations associated with altered functioning of certain types of neurons. These are nerve cells responsible for signal transmission and perception of sensitive stimuli, including pain impulses.
The study authors explained that the basis of a persistent cough reflex may be increased excitability of the central and peripheral nervous system. In fact, cough in such cases becomes analogous to chronic pain - a reaction to minimal or completely absent irritants.
This discovery could change the treatment approach: instead of conventional medications aimed at eliminating the symptom, doctors will be able to use agents that affect neural circuits regulating sensitivity. This approach promises to be effective for patients who don't respond to traditional therapy, including cold and antihistamine medications.
