The doctor named one of the main causes of memory deterioration
A constant feeling of absent-mindedness, "brain fog," and memory problems may be linked to chronic stress, specialists warn.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to "Lenta.ru," nutritionist at the Fitomarket marketplace Marina Ivanova explained that the stress hormone cortisol plays a key role in the deterioration of cognitive functions. According to her, its prolonged elevation negatively affects the ability to learn and memorize, and can also lead to changes in the hippocampus — the brain region responsible for forming new memories.
The expert clarified that in small amounts, cortisol helps the body mobilize, but under chronic stress, it begins to suppress the functioning of memory centers and reduces the activity of the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for logical thinking and self-control. At the same time, the response of areas associated with fear and anxiety is heightened. As a result, it becomes harder for a person to concentrate, make decisions, and control emotions.
In addition, stress is almost always accompanied by sleep disturbances. This prevents the brain from fully recovering: it is during the deep sleep phase that cleansing of metabolic waste products and toxins occurs. Ultimately, a vicious cycle forms — stress impairs sleep, and sleep deprivation, in turn, intensifies stress and further reduces cognitive abilities.
