The South Caucasus Facing a New Diplomatic Challenge: Will Erdogan Visit Armenia?
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been invited to the eighth summit of the European Political Community, which will take place on May 4 in Yerevan, Turkish media reported. The invitation is significant not only for Armenian-Turkish relations but also for the entire political architecture of the region.
As reported by BAKU.WS, this was stated in a video material by Baku TV.
In recent years, the European Political Community has served as a platform bringing together EU member states and non-member states at one table to discuss issues of security, energy, transport, regional stability, and political dialogue.
The official agenda of the 2026 Yerevan summit also includes topics such as communications, economic and energy security, and democratic resilience. If Erdogan participates in the summit, it will hold political significance for Turkey in several directions at once.
First, Ankara positions itself in its relations with Europe not merely as a candidate country, but as an integral participant in the European security and energy agenda.
Second, Turkey will demonstrate that it is not an outside observer of processes in the South Caucasus, but a directly shaping force.
Third, there will be a likelihood that the course toward normalization of relations with Armenia will now be able to be discussed not only at the level of technical negotiations, but also at the level of leaders' diplomacy.
