Another agreement on restoration works in the Basilica of Saint Paul has been signed between the Governorate of Vatican City State and the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.

As reported by AZERTAC, at a meeting held in the Vatican, the document was signed by Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Executive Director of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Anar Alakbarov and President of the Governorate of Vatican City State Sister Raffaella Petrini.

The new project envisages the restoration of the statues of Saint Paul and Saint Peter located inside the Basilica of Saint Paul, as well as the statues of Saint Paul and Saint Luke in the basilica's courtyard.

During a tour of the basilica complex accompanied by the Archpriest of the Basilica of Saint Paul, Cardinal James Harvey, detailed information was provided about the works carried out by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and the works planned for subsequent stages.

It was noted that the Basilica of Saint Paul, the second largest church in the Vatican after Saint Peter's Basilica, is among the four major papal basilicas of Rome. The basilica, distinguished by its monumental dimensions, rich mosaics, and long colonnades, holds immense significance as a religious and cultural monument and is visited annually by thousands of pilgrims and tourists.

The use of modern technologies is envisaged in carrying out the restoration works. In particular, surface cleaning using laser technologies and conservation works using biological agents that do not harm the environment are planned. These methods have previously been successfully applied in the Vatican Gardens as well.

An overview of previous restoration and construction works carried out with the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation also took place at the basilica.

It should be noted that on September 11, 2024, within the framework of the "Holy Jubilee Year," celebrated by the Holy See once every 25 years, a document was signed between the Governorate of Vatican City State and the Heydar Aliyev Foundation providing for the preservation, safety, and restoration of marble coverings and decorative elements of the Basilica of Saint Paul. Under this agreement, restoration and conservation works in the basilica have already been successfully completed.
