27 years have passed since the creation of the Azerbaijani special forces

27 years have passed since the establishment of the Special Forces of the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan.

The structural unit was established on April 30, 1999. Officers and warrant officers who participated in the first Karabakh war took part in its formation.

The Special Forces of the Turkish Armed Forces played a special role in the formation of the Azerbaijani special forces. Azerbaijani special forces soldiers participated in courses conducted at training centers in various countries around the world and repeatedly achieved high results in competitions in the USA, Turkey, and Pakistan.

On April 29, 2015, a ceremony was held to present battle flags to newly established special forces military units.

On June 26, 2018, a ceremonial military parade was held in Baku on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan. The Special Forces of Azerbaijan, which participated in combat operations in early April 2016, also marched in the military parade under the command of General Hikmet Mirzoyev.

It should be noted that during the battles in April 2016, Azerbaijani special forces units destroyed a large amount of enemy manpower and military equipment.

On June 20, 2020, another military unit of the Special Forces was inaugurated. At the end of July and beginning of August, a series of large-scale tactical joint Azerbaijani-Turkish exercises were held on the territory of Azerbaijan, with units of the Special Forces of Azerbaijan also deployed in the first phase. The 44-day Patriotic War of 2020 is considered the first in Azerbaijan in which all Special Forces actively participated.

In the war that began on September 27, 2020, special forces soldiers demonstrated heroism and courage in liberating our lands. Their ascent and subsequent liberation of the city of Shusha from enemy occupation entered world history.

During the 44-day Patriotic War, the personnel of the Special Forces liberated a number of territories from occupation. On November 8, President Ilham Aliyev congratulated Hikmet Mirzoyev on the liberation of the city of Shusha from the occupiers.

Today, the Azerbaijani special forces possess modern weapons, combat equipment, and technology from leading global defense industry companies.

36 servicemen of the Special Forces have been awarded the title of Hero of the Patriotic War.
