Scientists have discovered a new virus
Scientists have identified a new virus carried by bats living in Australia. This was reported by The Telegraph newspaper.
"A new bat-borne pathogen called the Salt Gully virus has been discovered in flying foxes in Australia," the article states.
Experts note that this virus is related to two others - Nipah and Hendra, which the World Health Organization classifies as "priority pathogens".
Scientists also report that there are currently no signs that Salt Gully can infect humans. Researchers from Australia's National Science Agency added that they cannot say exactly how the situation will develop in the future, and did not predict whether the new pathogen could lead to disease outbreaks.
