Doctor warned about the risk of dementia due to taking a popular medication

Prolonged and uncontrolled use of diphenhydramine (Benadryl) can significantly increase the likelihood of developing dementia in the future. This warning was issued by renowned therapist, allergist, and immunologist Amy Shah, who shared the alarming information on her social media, reports the Daily Mail.
The specialist references several scientific studies that have discovered a concerning link between the use of medications containing diphenhydramine and the onset of dementia. According to one study, elderly patients who took such medications for three years had a 54 percent increased risk of developing senile dementia. Another study showed that men who regularly used such medications had a 22 percent higher probability of experiencing dementia.
Amy Shah draws attention to the widespread prevalence of diphenhydramine in the pharmaceutical industry. This substance is included in many popular medications used for flu, cold, allergic reactions, and sleep disorders. The doctor clarifies that not all medications containing diphenhydramine are equally dangerous. The real threat comes from prolonged use, especially when the medication is systematically used as a sleeping aid. "If you know someone who regularly takes these products, or if you yourself constantly use them, please stop," the medical professional strongly recommends.
As an alternative to uncontrolled self-medication, Shah advises consulting a qualified specialist who can select a safer medication or provide strict control over the dosage and duration of treatment with diphenhydramine.
