Named non-obvious mistakes made during blood pressure measurement
Many people get distorted blood pressure readings due to talking, crossing their legs, and lack of back support during measurement. This warning was issued by Doctor of Medical Sciences and therapist C.M. Fayaz in a comment for the Times of India.
According to the specialist, one of the most common mistakes is talking during blood pressure measurement. In addition, crossed legs and a tense posture can affect the results. Under such conditions, readings can be 10-15 points higher or lower than the actual values.
Fayaz also noted that the technical aspect of the procedure affects accuracy as well. For example, the correct size of the blood pressure monitor cuff plays an important role: a cuff that is too small or too large can produce incorrect readings. Measuring blood pressure immediately after consuming coffee, physical exertion, or without prior rest is also considered a mistake.
To obtain more accurate data, the doctor advises taking measurements in a calm environment. Before the procedure, one should sit for a few minutes, lean back against the chair, and place both feet flat on the floor without crossing them.
The specialist recommends checking blood pressure twice a day, taking three consecutive measurements and recording the average value.
Fayaz reminded that arterial hypertension is often called the "silent killer," since the condition can persist for a long time without noticeable symptoms. Therefore, he advises measuring blood pressure at least once every six months and consulting a doctor if the upper readings regularly exceed 140 millimeters of mercury.
