Chemist dispelled myths about gel polishes

Ph.D. in Chemistry Andrey Dorokhov, in a conversation with Life.ru, called the possible ban on gel polishes "excessive precaution".
The expert explained that the concern is related to the substance (2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl) diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO), which is used as a photopolymerization initiator.
According to him, in large doses, this compound can indeed have a negative effect on the reproductive system. However, gel polishes contain very small amounts of it, and it hardly penetrates through the nail plate.
The scientist also noted that TPO does not evaporate, so there is no reason to fear the smell of the coating. "The polish can be safely smelled and used," he added.
According to the chemist, due to the low concentration of the substance in the product composition, it does not pose a real threat to health. Therefore, statements about the danger of gel polishes, the expert emphasized, do not have serious scientific grounds.
