A natural remedy for controlling blood sugar levels has been named
Regular consumption of flaxseed can improve control of blood sugar and fat levels in people with type 2 diabetes. This conclusion was reached by researchers from Mexico based on the results of a randomized clinical trial published in the journal Nutrients.
The study involved adult patients with poorly controlled diabetes - a condition in which blood sugar levels remain high despite treatment. For three months, one group received 16 g of ground flaxseed daily in addition to standard therapy, while the control group followed regular recommendations.
The results showed: participants who consumed flax had decreased levels of fasting glucose, total cholesterol, and triglycerides. The glycated hemoglobin indicator, which reflects the average blood sugar level over recent months, also improved. No such changes were observed in the control group - many patients maintained elevated glucose and blood lipid levels.
The authors attribute the positive effect to the high content of soluble fiber and biologically active compounds in flaxseed, which affect glucose and fat metabolism and can increase tissue sensitivity to insulin.
The researchers emphasize that flaxseed does not replace medical treatment for diabetes. However, regularly adding it to the diet can be a simple and affordable way to additionally support metabolic control in people with diabetes, prediabetes, and excess weight.
