Scientists have discovered that changing diet will help save the world
The holiday season is associated with overeating for many people, however, a new study from the University of British Columbia has shown: to curb global warming, humanity's diet must change. According to scientists, if sufficient and more balanced food consumption is provided worldwide, this will help prevent an increase in the Earth's average temperature by 2 degrees Celsius. Currently, 44% of the planet's population already needs to reconsider their diet.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Environmental Research: Food Systems, according to new scientific data, half of the world's population and at least 90% of Canada's residents need to change their diet to prevent serious global warming. Scientists emphasize that these figures are conservative, as the study used data from 2012. Since then, population and greenhouse gas emissions have increased. According to expert forecasts, by 2050, 90% of the planet's population will have to eat differently.
In total, the research team analyzed data from 112 countries, which account for 99% of global greenhouse gas emissions related to food production. The population of each country was divided into 10 groups based on income level.
It was found that 15% of people with the highest emissions are responsible for 30% of the total volume of food-related greenhouse gases. This is comparable to the contribution of 50% of the population with the lowest emissions. This group mainly includes the wealthiest residents of countries with high levels of pollution.
However, as experts note, a diet exceeding the permissible climate limit is characteristic of a significantly larger number of people. Therefore, it is necessary to change the diet not only for the richest, but for at least half of the Earth's population. In Canada, this limit is exceeded by all 10 population groups regardless of income.
Among the key recommendations of scientists - consume only the amount of food that is really necessary, as well as reduce or completely eliminate beef from the diet. According to the study, 43% of greenhouse gas emissions associated with the diet of an average Canadian comes from beef.
