# Night Sweats: An Alarming Symptom or Normal?
People may feel hot at night due to internal processes in the body, says dietitian Colleen Fogarty-Draper.
She identified the cause of nighttime awakenings due to heavy sweating in an interview with HuffPost.
The specialist noted that such symptoms are more common in women and are explained by hormonal fluctuations that affect thermoregulation. According to her, even small changes in estrogen and progesterone levels can "disrupt" the body's functioning, causing a sensation of overheating and sudden excessive sweating during sleep.
Fogarty-Draper added that stress can worsen the situation, as elevated cortisol levels also affect sleep and intensify the sensation of overheating. To reduce this unpleasant symptom, the dietitian recommended maintaining a cool temperature in the bedroom, choosing lightweight sleepwear, and avoiding overheating before bed.
At the same time, the specialist emphasized that even during menopause, one should not simply endure hot flashes. According to her, if they interfere with sleep, a doctor should be consulted.
