A dentist explained why teeth darken with age and how to stop it
Age-related tooth darkening is considered a natural process, but modern care methods and dentistry can significantly slow down these changes. This was explained by orthodontist and Candidate of Medical Sciences Andrey Zhuk.
As reported by BAKU.WS citing the Russian expert, tooth shade changes not only due to external factors but also as a result of natural processes within the dental tissue. According to the specialist, with age, enamel gradually thins, causing the dentin — the inner layer with a more yellow shade — to become more visible.
An additional role, as experts note, is played by pigment accumulation. Coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco leave deposits that over time penetrate deeper into the tooth surface and are not always removed by regular brushing.
Another cause is internal changes within the tooth. Dentin gradually becomes denser and darker, especially after dental treatment. This is most noticeable in devitalized teeth. In such cases, according to experts, an effective solution may be internal bleaching, which allows restoring the natural shade from within.
Specialists emphasize that it is impossible to completely stop age-related color changes, but regular professional hygiene, proper brushing technique, and monitoring daily habits help maintain a healthy and natural tooth color for a long time. In cases of pronounced darkening, external whitening, veneers, and modern restorative methods are also used.
