The number of confirmed hantavirus infection cases following the MV Hondius cruise ship incident has risen to 13, according to World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

As reported by BAKU.WS citing data from the international organization, the new case was recorded in Spain among passengers who are under quarantine after the voyage. According to the WHO chief, the situation remains under control and shows no signs of deterioration.

The outbreak became known in early May when the MV Hondius, traveling across the Atlantic Ocean from Argentina to Cape Verde, reported passengers with symptoms of severe respiratory infection.

According to foreign specialists, hantavirus is transmitted through contact with particles contaminated by excretions of infected rodents. The disease can affect the lungs and kidneys, causing fever, severe pain, and respiratory disturbances. Medical experts note that the infection is considered extremely dangerous and in severe cases can lead to death.
