Nargiz Garajayeva: Liberated territories will contribute to the development of Azerbaijan's green economy
In accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Azerbaijan plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2050 and create a zero-emission zone in the liberated territories.
As Report informs, this was stated by Nargiz Garajayeva, Senior Advisor to the Special Representation of the President of Azerbaijan in Jabrayil, Gubadly, and Zangilan districts, at an event held within the framework of WUF13 in Baku.
According to her, the liberated territories have been designated as "green energy" zones and are considered a key element of the national program for transitioning to alternative energy sources and achieving carbon neutrality. As part of this strategy, the country intends to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2050 and establish a zero-emission territory.
Garajayeva emphasized that the natural potential of the region is being actively utilized for the development of a sustainable and "green" economy. In particular, water resources in Zangilan and Gubadly are being harnessed to generate clean energy. Four small hydroelectric power plants with a total capacity of 42 MW have already been built on the Okhchuchay River, which will fully supply the city of Zangilan with electricity.
She also noted the significant potential of solar energy in the region. Thanks to the large number of sunny days and high levels of solar radiation, corresponding projects are being implemented: a 240 MW solar power plant is being constructed in the Jabrayil district, and a solar power plant with a total capacity of 100 MW is also planned for commissioning.
In addition, the Khudafarin and Giz Galasi hydro complexes and hydroelectric power plants on the Araz River contribute to the development of "green" energy in East Zangezur.
According to the representative, these initiatives are fully aligned with the national strategy to transform the region into a green energy hub, while the issues of protecting natural resources, water basins, and biodiversity remain a priority within the framework of the country's sustainable development.
