Today, March 19, the UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO) published its annual report on the state of the global climate, reports Oxu.Az with reference to the newspaper "Kommersant".

WMO experts confirmed that 2024 was the hottest year in the history of meteorological observations, which began 175 years ago. In addition, it became the first year when the average temperature exceeded the pre-industrial level (before 1900) by more than 1.5°C.

The report also showed that the last eight consecutive years have set records for ocean heat content. Furthermore, all 18 years with the smallest Arctic sea ice area have occurred in the last 18 years of observations.

The rise in global temperatures is leading to accelerated melting of polar ice, sea level rise, and increased frequency of hurricanes, typhoons, and tsunamis. In Antarctica, the three lowest sea ice area indicators have been recorded in the last three years, as well as the fastest glacier mass loss in the history of observations.

"Our planet is sending more and more distress signals," said UN Secretary-General António Guterres. He emphasized that the rate of sea level rise has doubled since satellite observations began.

The UN report also notes that in 2024, tropical cyclones, floods, droughts, and other natural disasters caused a record number of forced displacements in the last 16 years, exacerbated the food crisis, and caused significant economic damage.
