Southern Kamchatka shifted by 2 meters after a powerful earthquake
After the earthquake on July 30 in Kamchatka, scientists recorded significant geodynamic changes.
This is reported by Russian media.
According to preliminary data, the southern part of the peninsula shifted to the southeast by almost 2 meters - this is comparable to the horizontal movements after the 2011 earthquake in Japan's Tohoku. Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and its stations shifted insignificantly.
As reported by the Kamchatka branch of the Federal Research Center "Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences," the displacements correspond to the model of movements at the earthquake's epicenter, where maximum changes were observed on the southern flank. This explains the strong macroseismic effect in Severo-Kurilsk and the less pronounced effect in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
