"Azerbaijan Railways" continues the construction of a railway that will connect the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic with the Zangezur corridor.

The Nakhchivan bureau of Report visited the works being carried out in the Ordubad district and prepared a report.

Construction works are underway on the first 7-kilometer section from the Azerbaijani-Armenian border in the direction of Ordubad. The first stage of design and construction, launched at the end of 2025, covers the Salammaylik, Ordubad, Aza, and Julfa sections.

The length of the line along the axis is 194 km, together with side tracks - 264 km. Along the railway, the construction and reconstruction of 814 engineering structures is planned, including 10 stations, 3 platforms, 29 bridges, 11 overpasses, and various crossings. 12 protective galleries along the route are being thoroughly reconstructed. Work on overpasses, concrete channels, and other engineering structures is also continuing.

Earthworks have been completed on a 6-kilometer section. On a 700-meter section from Salammaylik station, new rail-sleeper grids have been installed. After the completion of the major overhaul, the annual freight capacity of the railway will be 15 million tons.

The railway network being reconstructed in Nakhchivan will join the Zangezur corridor from the Ordubad side, while the Goradiz-Aghband railway line will connect from the side of mainland Azerbaijan. This will enable the formation of a direct railway connection between mainland Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, as well as provide a direct railway connection with Turkey.
