Military Aircraft That Claimed Hundreds of Lives: C-130 Crash Statistics
A Turkish Air Force C-130 military transport aircraft that departed from Ganja the day before has crashed on Georgian territory. According to preliminary data, all those on board have died.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Report, this is not the first incident involving aircraft of this type.
On July 1, 2012, a C-130H2 aircraft belonging to the US Air Force crashed in southwestern South Dakota while on a forest firefighting mission. There were six people on board, two survived.
On February 11, 2014, an Algerian Air Force C-130H-30 aircraft crashed in a mountainous area near the city of Ain Kersha. There were 76 people on board, of whom only one survived.
On March 28, 2018, a similar incident occurred in India, where five crew members died. Six months later, a similar disaster in Egypt claimed the lives of six people.
On June 30, 2015, an Indonesian Air Force C-130B aircraft crashed in a residential area of Medan city shortly after taking off from Suwondo Air Base. All 122 people on board died. Four months later, a US Air Force C-130J-30 aircraft crashed in Afghanistan shortly after takeoff, killing 14 people.
In addition, crashes of this type of aircraft occurred in 2016 in Portugal (3 dead), in Indonesia (13 dead), in 2017 in the USA (16 dead) and in 2018 in Libya (3 dead).
On July 4, 2021, a C-130H aircraft crashed in the Philippines - of the 85 people on board, 40 were rescued. The most devastating tragedy involving this aircraft occurred on September 26, 1992, in Nigeria, where at least 158 people died as a result of the crash.
In total, according to calculations, during the operational history, 327 crashes of military modifications of the C-130 have been recorded, resulting in 3,466 deaths.
The C-130 Hercules series aircraft, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, have been in operation for more than half a century and are in service in more than 70 countries worldwide. The model first took to the air in 1954 and over time was upgraded to the C-130J Super Hercules version. Despite numerous improvements, crash statistics show that these aircraft are not immune to tragedies.
C-130 aircraft are used for transporting military cargo and personnel, landing operations, medical evacuation, firefighting, delivering humanitarian aid, and conducting special missions.
