Head of NGO Engaged in Espionage for Two Countries Arrested in Georgia
The State Security Service of Georgia has arrested the head of one of the local NGOs on espionage charges.
As Report informs, he is accused of collaborating with the intelligence services of two foreign states.
At a briefing, the SSS stated that over the course of several years, he systematically gathered intelligence and transmitted it to foreign intelligence services in exchange for material compensation and in the interests of other states.
According to the agency, he maintained contacts with representatives of foreign intelligence services both in person and through electronic means of communication. Meetings were held outside the country to coordinate activities.
It is also reported that the detainee, using funding and assignments from foreign intelligence services, created information platforms and organized events within the country.
An investigation is underway under Article 314 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (espionage), which carries a prison sentence of 8 to 12 years.
