Canada, Australia and Britain recognized the Palestinian state
Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom (in that sequence with an interval of several minutes) announced the recognition of the Palestinian state. Canada became the first country of the "Group of Seven" (G7) to officially recognize Palestine.
Several Western countries - France, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Belgium, Portugal - previously announced that they would recognize the Palestinian state during the annual session of the UN General Assembly, which opens on Monday.
The administration of US President Donald Trump opposes this step, and Israel also criticizes it.
"Today, to revive hope for peace for Palestinians and Israelis and for a two-state solution, the United Kingdom officially recognizes the State of Palestine," said Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Keir Starmer in a video address.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a statement published on his X account: "Canada recognizes the state of Palestine and offers its partnership in building a peaceful future for both the state of Palestine and the state of Israel".
