Media: The Pentagon is running out of money due to the war with Iran

The Pentagon is rapidly spending its budget due to the war in Iran, and funds for some key spending categories could run out within weeks.

According to the publication's sources, the U.S. military department is being forced to cut back on training to maintain combat readiness. The U.S. Navy and Air Force could exhaust funds allocated for a number of spending categories under the 2026 budget by the end of July, WP writes. In recent weeks, the Pentagon requested Congressional approval to reallocate $4.3 billion from training and weapons procurement to "fund more urgent priorities" and is awaiting a response.

The White House earlier submitted a request to the U.S. Congress for the emergency allocation of $67 billion to fund military operations, the newspaper recalls. However, the House of Representatives intends to go on recess starting July 23, which will delay the decision on allocating the funds by at least several weeks. If Congress does not approve the funding, the Pentagon will have to resort to "more painful measures," WP writes.

The U.S. and Israel began the war with Iran on February 28. In June, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding providing for an immediate cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including in Lebanon. However, on the night of July 8, the U.S. resumed large-scale strikes on Iran, accusing it of violating the terms of the agreements reached regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
