Britain Has Sent a Destroyer to the Eastern Mediterranean
The Royal Navy destroyer HMS Dragon has departed from Portsmouth, England, and headed to the Eastern Mediterranean to strengthen the security of the British airbase Akrotiri in Cyprus.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to TASS, this was stated in a Royal Navy announcement.
"The Royal Navy destroyer HMS Dragon left the United Kingdom today to head to the Eastern Mediterranean to strengthen British defense in the region," the statement said. It is emphasized that the deployment of the ship, which is armed with the Sea Viper missile system, will enable more effective countermeasures against drones launched toward the Akrotiri base.
Earlier, London additionally deployed three Wildcat helicopters and a Merlin helicopter to Akrotiri. On March 2, the base sustained damage as a result of a drone attack. According to a statement by UK Defence Secretary John Healey, the drone was launched from the territory of Lebanon or Iraq.
On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a military operation against Iran. Major Iranian cities, including Tehran, came under strikes. The White House justified the attack by citing missile and nuclear threats allegedly posed by Tehran. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced a large-scale retaliatory operation, striking targets in Israel. US facilities in Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia were also subjected to strikes.
