The EU Ambassador in Tbilisi, Pawel Herczynski, arrived at Georgia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs after being summoned over his words that the country faces "dark times."
As reported by Oxu.Az, this was announced by the First Channel of Georgia's Public Broadcaster.
Earlier, Herczynski told journalists that the European Union must not allow the Georgian people to "return to violence, civil war, poverty, corruption, and dark times." The republic's authorities interpreted the ambassador's words as a threat against its population.
The meeting with Herczynski is being conducted by Georgia's Vice Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili. The European diplomat made no statements to the press before entering the foreign ministry building.
In May 2024, Georgia's parliament adopted the law "On Transparency of Foreign Influence," and the country's relations with the EU and the US began to deteriorate. The European Union repeatedly called on Tbilisi to abandon this law; however, leaders of the ruling party "Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia" consistently maintained that the law's purpose was to ensure transparency of financial flows to NGOs operating in Georgia, some of which had attempted to stage a revolution in the country.
On October 26, 2024, in parliamentary elections, "Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia" won and secured 89 out of 150 seats in the legislature. In November 2024, the party decided to suspend discussions with the EU on opening accession negotiations until 2028 and to reject all budget grants from the European Union.
