A dangerous virus threatens the world - scientists warn of the risk of a new pandemic

An international group of scientists has published an open letter in the prestigious scientific journal Science, calling for preparation for a possible H5N1 bird flu pandemic. The initiative was led by Professor Jesse Goodman from Georgetown University.
Experts note that the H5N1 virus shows signs of adaptation to mammals, including cattle and humans. Currently, only cases of transmission from animals to humans have been recorded, without human-to-human spread.
Although most current cases are mild, experts point to the high potential for virus spread. Scientists emphasize the need to develop a comprehensive response plan for various scenarios of situation development.
The priority task is identified as developing an effective vaccine with large-scale production capability. Special attention is given to mRNA vaccine technologies and new antigenic preparations.
The letter emphasizes the importance of ensuring equal access to vaccines for all countries, regardless of their level of economic development. The need to develop a scientifically based public information strategy is specifically noted.
Professor Francesco Broccolo from the University of Salento characterizes the situation as a serious risk requiring the creation of adaptive vaccine platforms and improvement of epidemiological surveillance systems.
