A method to slow down physical aging has been found
Knowledge of several languages helps slow down the aging process, scientists claim. A study published in the journal Nature Aging showed: the more languages a person knows, the longer their cognitive abilities and physical activity are preserved, reports BAKU.WS.
An international group of researchers analyzed data from 86 thousand people from 27 European countries aged 51 to 90 years.
According to the results of cognitive tests, those who speak only one language have approximately twice the risk of accelerated aging compared to multilingual participants.
Scientists note that proficiency in multiple languages maintains the flexibility of the nervous system and helps prevent memory and motor impairments. In terms of impact, this factor is comparable to regular physical exercise and active social interaction, which also contribute to longevity and preservation of vital energy.
Although the differences cannot be explained solely by language knowledge - lifestyle, diet, and cultural characteristics may influence the results - even after accounting for these factors, the positive effect of multilingualism persists.
"50-75% of the world's population speaks more than one language. However, among English speakers, the majority remain monolingual. Therefore, results about the protective effect of bilingualism may come as a surprise to such people," noted Professor Stephen May from the University of Auckland.
