Burning candles can significantly worsen indoor air quality by releasing ultrafine particles capable of penetrating deep into the lungs. According to experts, such substances are linked to inflammatory processes and an increased risk of developing a number of diseases, including cancer.

As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to The Conversation, this was discussed by researcher Karin Laursen from Aarhus University. During experiments, scientists compared the effects of burning candles and cooking on indoor air quality. It was found that both processes release polluting particles; however, when candles were used, their concentration turned out to be significantly higher.

At the same time, the particles produced by burning candles are considerably smaller — about 7–8 nanometers compared to approximately 80 nanometers from cooking. Due to their extremely small size, they are able to penetrate the alveoli of the lungs and then enter the bloodstream and spread throughout the body.

In addition to soot, nitrogen dioxide and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are detected in the air — substances that, according to scientists, are similar in their effects to pollution from diesel engine exhaust. To reduce the risk, experts recommend lighting candles less frequently, using fewer of them, and making sure to ventilate the room.
