A hidden living world weighing over 20 billion tons discovered in the depths of the Earth

May 3, 2025 - Scientists from different countries have announced the discovery of a massive ecosystem hidden beneath the Earth's surface. This is not science fiction, but the result of years of research involving more than 200 specialists from 52 countries.
According to expert estimates, trillions of living microorganisms inhabit the depths of the planet, with a total weight that may range from 15 to 23 billion tons. This significantly exceeds the total weight of all humanity.
The discovered organisms include bacteria, microbes, and microscopic worms, including nematodes. They were found at a depth of about five kilometers below the surface, in an environment completely devoid of sunlight. This unique underground biological kingdom exists and develops independently from the surface we are familiar with.
Interestingly, up to 70% of these creatures are also found on the Earth's surface, but behave differently in the depths: their physiology and the speed of life processes differ due to extreme conditions.
The total volume of underground biomass may occupy up to 2 billion cubic kilometers. According to researchers, this discovery could change our understanding of life on the planet and become the key to new biotechnological breakthroughs.
Work in this direction continues, and specialists hope that further research will help to reveal more deeply the secrets of Earth's underground life.
