The funeral ceremony took place on Saturday morning at the parish church of Gondomar, a suburb of Porto. The Liverpool team, led by their captain Virgil Van Dijk, joined the family and thousands of people to bid farewell to the brothers.

Thousands of people gathered on Saturday morning at the parish church of Gondomar, a municipality in the metropolitan area of Porto, for the funeral of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who died on Thursday in a road accident in Spain.

The Bishop of Porto, Manuel Linda, led the funeral mass. The church was completely full, with several hundred people following the ceremony through loudspeakers outside.

The coffins bearing the names of the two players were carried by friends and players from Gondomar club, where Diogo Jota began playing football at the age of 9. They were then transported to the cemetery next to the church.

The walking procession to the cemetery was accompanied by thousands of fans who wanted to pay their last respects to the two local players from afar.

The ceremony was attended by Liverpool players led by their captain Virgil Van Dijk, who carried a red floral arrangement in the shape of a football jersey with Diogo Jota's white number 20.

Liverpool teammate Andrew Robertson carried a similar arrangement with the number 30 - the number worn by Jota's brother André Silva, who played for Penafiel football club, currently in the second division.

The funeral was also attended by Portugal national team coach Roberto Martinez and several leading Portuguese players, including Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias from Manchester City and Bruno Fernandes from Manchester United. Cristiano Ronaldo, the national team captain, was absent from the ceremony.
