Legendary Formula 1 driver Niki Lauda: tragedy and triumph on the track

Niki Lauda went down in history as one of the most outstanding Formula 1 drivers, as well as a symbol of courage and willpower. His life and career became an example of how one can overcome terrible trials and remain at the top.
Andreas Nikolaus Lauda was born in Vienna in 1949 to a wealthy Austrian family. His relatives wanted to see him as a banker or businessman, but young Niki was attracted to cars and speed from childhood. His family did not support his passion, so he took out a loan to start his career in motorsport and did everything to prove his worth on the track.
His first serious success was in Formula 2, where he proved himself as a technical and cool-headed driver. Soon, Formula 1 teams noticed him. The real breakthrough happened after his move to Ferrari in 1974. From that moment, Lauda began to rise to the top of world motorsport. Already in 1975, he became world champion, giving Ferrari a long-awaited title.
However, it was 1976 that forever went down in history due to a tragic incident. At the Nürburgring track during the German Grand Prix, his car caught fire after an accident. Lauda was trapped in a fiery trap and suffered severe burns to his face and body, as well as serious lung damage. His life hung in the balance, but his incredible strength of character allowed him to get behind the wheel again after six weeks. Although he lost the championship to James Hunt by just one point, the whole world remembered his act as a symbol of fearlessness.
A year later, Lauda reclaimed his title, proving that the tragedy had not broken him. In 1979, he unexpectedly ended his career and devoted himself to business, founding his own airline, Lauda Air. But his passion for racing prevailed, and in 1982 he returned to the track, signing a contract with McLaren. Just two years later, he became world champion for the third time, finally cementing his place among the greatest drivers of all time.
After finally retiring from racing, Niki was actively involved in the aviation business and consulting for Formula 1 teams. He worked as an advisor and manager at Ferrari, Jaguar, and Mercedes, making a huge contribution to the development of the teams. His contribution to Mercedes' success was particularly prominent, where he played an important role in signing the contract with Lewis Hamilton.
Lauda was known for his directness and iron character. He never hesitated to criticize and openly say what he thought. He was respected not only for his sporting achievements but also for his personal qualities.
Lauda's life was forever changed by the 1976 accident. He carried facial scars for the rest of his life and went through numerous operations, including a lung transplant. Despite this, he continued to work actively and remained part of the motorsport world until his last days.
Niki Lauda passed away in 2019 at the age of 70. His death was a great loss for the sport, but his name forever remains a symbol of courage, will to win, and love for speed.
