Former England captain Sir David Beckham was officially knighted for his outstanding contribution to football development and support of British society.

As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to foreign media, the ceremony took place on Tuesday in Berkshire, where King Charles III personally bestowed the knighthood on Beckham. The athlete's name was previously included in the official list of honorees on the occasion of the monarch's birthday.

The 50-year-old Beckham arrived at Windsor Castle for the ceremony wearing a suit designed by his wife Victoria. Recall that she was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2017 for her contribution to the fashion industry.

"King Charles was very impressed with my suit," Beckham noted.

The footballer admitted that being knighted was a special honor for him:
"I am more than proud. People know how patriotic I am and how much I love my country. I have always talked about what the monarchy means to my family. Traveling around the world, I notice that many people are interested specifically in our kingdom, and I am proud to represent it."

During the ceremony, the king touched Beckham's shoulder with a sword as he knelt on a special platform.

David Beckham is considered one of the brightest stars of British football. From 1996 to 2009, he played 115 matches for the national team, scoring 17 goals, participated in three World Cups and two European Championships, and from 2000 to 2006 was the team captain.
