Today is the Day of Remembrance of the outstanding scientist, professor of literary studies, critic and translator Aida Imanguliyeva, who holds a special place in the history of world Oriental studies.
As BAKU.WS reminds us, A. Imanguliyeva was born on October 10, 1939, in Baku in an intellectual family. Her father - journalist, educator, and honored scientist Nasir Imanguliyev was one of the founders of the Azerbaijani press and worked for a long time as the editor of the newspapers "Baky" and "Baku".
In 1957, A. Imanguliyeva graduated with a gold medal from secondary school No. 132 in Baku, which now functions as an educational complex. From 1957 to 1962, Aida Imanguliyeva studied at the Department of Arabic Philology at the Faculty of Oriental Studies of Azerbaijan State University (now Baku State University), was a graduate student at the Department of Literary History of the Peoples of the Near East at this university, and also studied as a graduate student at the Institute of Asian Peoples of the former USSR.
After defending her candidate dissertation in 1966, Aida Imanguliyeva began her career at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. Thanks to her talent and diligence, she rose from a junior researcher to head of department, deputy director for scientific work, and finally, director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.
In 1989, Aida Imanguliyeva defended her doctoral dissertation in Tbilisi and soon received the title of professor.
She is the author of three fundamental monographs ("The Pen Association" and Mikhail Nuaime", "Gibran Khalil Gibran", "Luminaries of New Arabic Literature") and more than 70 scientific articles, editor of many works on Eastern philology. She was the chairman of the Council for the Defense of Doctoral and Candidate Dissertations in the profile "Literature of the Countries of Asia and Africa", operating at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. A. Imanguliyeva worthily represented Azerbaijani Oriental studies in the former USSR and beyond.
In her scientific and organizational activities, Aida Imanguliyeva paid great attention to the training of highly qualified Arabists. At the Department of Arabic Philology, which she headed, more than 10 candidate dissertations were defended in a short time.
As a member of the presidium of the All-Union Society of Orientalists, the All-Union Coordination Council for the Study of Eastern Literatures, A. Imanguliyeva fruitfully conducted pedagogical activities for many years, giving lectures on Arabic philology at Azerbaijan State University.
Professor Aida Imanguliyeva is the first Azerbaijani scientist to systematically study the literary connections and influence of East and West in Azerbaijan. Her numerous scientific works explore the synthesis of Western and Eastern cultural traditions, the development of creative style and the emergence of a new artistic style, which is the basis for studying not only Arabic literature but also modern Eastern literature as a whole.
The range of A. Imanguliyeva's scientific interests was quite broad and multifaceted. However, the main object of her scientific research was Arabic literature. Aida Imanguliyeva masterfully translated into Azerbaijani the stories of Mikhail Nuaime, Mahmoud Az-Zahir, Mohammed Dib, Sahib Jamal, Suheil Idris, and other authors.
Her life companion was Arif Pashayev.
The famous Orientalist is the mother of First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva and the rector of the Baku branch of Lomonosov Moscow State University, Nargiz Pashayeva.
Aida Imanguliyeva died on September 19, 1992.
To perpetuate the memory of the famous scientist A. Imanguliyeva, the Faculty of Oriental Studies of Baku State University established a scholarship bearing her name, which is awarded to one of the excellent students of the faculty.
