The White House confirmed that the US has raised customs duties on imports from China by another 50% - to a level of 104%.

As BAKU.WS reports with reference to TASS, the corresponding statement was made at a regular briefing for journalists by White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt.

According to her, President Donald Trump is convinced that China "must make a deal with the United States." "It was a mistake on China's part to take retaliatory measures," Leavitt said, emphasizing that "for this reason, tariffs of 104% will begin to apply to China." "They will come into effect at 00:01 (08:01 Baku time on April 9 - ed.), which means effectively from tomorrow," explained the White House representative.

"The President is confident that [PRC Chairman] Xi [Jinping] and China want to make a deal, they just don't know how to approach it. The President also wanted me to convey to you that if China contacts [the US] to make a deal, he will be incredibly courteous, but will do what is best for the American people," Leavitt continued, noting that it "would be unwise" on her part to disclose the conditions under which the US would agree to reduce customs duties on imports from China.

At the beginning of the year, the US and China had already imposed mutual tariffs, which by March 4 reached 20% from the US side. As the reason for imposing tariffs on both China and Canada and Mexico, Trump cited the allegedly insufficient efforts of these countries' governments in combating the spread of the narcotic substance fentanyl. On April 2, Trump announced the introduction of new customs duties on products from 185 countries and territories. Regarding China, American tariffs were set at 34%, thus reaching 54%.

The Chinese authorities responded to the new tariffs from the American administration in a mirror-like fashion, also introducing additional duties of 34% on all imports from the US. After this, Trump announced his intention to raise tariffs on goods from China by another 50%.
