The President of Kazakhstan warned about a catastrophe in the Caspian Sea

The situation with the shallowing of the Caspian Sea is approaching an ecological catastrophe. This was stated by the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, his words are quoted by the press service of the head of the republic in the Telegram channel.
"The deplorable situation around the Caspian Sea. The situation is approaching an ecological catastrophe," said the President of Kazakhstan.
He decided to draw the attention of SCO participants to this problem. Tokayev proposed creating a Center for the Analysis of Water Problems in Astana under the auspices of the organization to keep the situation with the Caspian Sea under control.
In addition, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced a regional environmental summit in Astana in April 2026 in partnership with the UN and reminded about the 25th anniversary that the SCO will celebrate next year.
On July 22, a representative of the Volga-Caspian branch of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries reported that the water level in the Caspian Sea had dropped to a record low. According to the specialist, it was less than -29 meters according to the Baltic height system.
The expert explained that the sea level began to decline intensively after 2020. In the period from 2022 to 2023, the water level fell by 29 centimeters. This is primarily influenced by the active consumption of water from rivers flowing into the Caspian, as well as intensive water evaporation due to increased greenhouse gas emissions and rising temperatures.
