The national debt of 16 European Union countries has reached a historic high
Government debt has reached an all-time high simultaneously in 16 member states of the European Union.
This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to European statistics data.
It is noted that the total government debt of the 27 EU member states increased to 15.705 trillion euros by the end of the first quarter, which is the highest figure since 1994.
The largest volumes of government debt were recorded in France, Italy, and Germany — 3.536 trillion, 3.158 trillion, and 2.902 trillion euros, respectively.
In addition, government debt reached an all-time high by the end of the first quarter of 2026 in Spain, Belgium, Austria, Finland, Romania, and Hungary. A similar situation is observed in Slovakia, Croatia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Latvia, Malta, and Estonia.
