Spain criticized Merz for silence before Trump
Spain's Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Díaz criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for his behavior during a meeting with US President Donald Trump.
As reported by BAKU.WS, this was reported by Politico.
According to Díaz, Merz sat silently in the Oval Office while Trump delivered an angry speech directed at the Spanish government, calling it "horrible" and threatening to sever trade ties. Díaz placed the German chancellor among the European Union (EU) leaders "who have no idea how to manage the historic moment in which we live."
"Today Europe needs leadership, not vassals who pay tribute to Trump," the Spanish politician concluded.
Earlier, Trump spoke about US-Germany relations and jokingly "hit" the chancellor during a meeting at the White House. The American leader repeatedly praised the German chancellor as a friend while criticizing other Europeans, yet Merz barely spoke.
Later, the chancellor stated that during a luncheon conversation with the US president, he privately spoke up in defense of Spain and the United Kingdom as allies, which also drew Trump's anger.
