Powerful earthquake in Japan caused a shift in the Earth's crust
A powerful earthquake that struck the northern coast of Japan in Aomori Prefecture caused significant geological changes. According to the country's Geospatial Information Authority, horizontal displacement of the earth's crust of approximately 9 centimeters occurred in the epicenter area.
"At the electronic geodetic station 'Higashi-dori 2', located near the epicenter zone, a displacement of about 9 cm in the eastern direction was recorded," the official website of the authority reported on December 9.
Specialists emphasize that the obtained results are preliminary and may be adjusted after additional verification and data analysis.
Recall that the day before, a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 occurred in northern Japan. The epicenter of the underground tremors was located off the eastern coast of Aomori Prefecture at a depth of about 50 km. The natural disaster caused a tsunami 40 cm high in the northeast of the country. In Iwate Prefecture near the city of Kuji, wave heights reached 50 cm.
As a result of the natural disaster, seven people were injured. About 800 households were left without electricity. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi ordered the government to coordinate actions with local authorities to provide assistance to victims and ensure timely information to the population about the tsunami and the need for evacuation. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara is monitoring the situation with the aftermath of the disaster.
