US medical authorities have taken a historic step in the development of transplantology by approving clinical trials for transplanting genetically modified pig kidneys to humans.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given the green light to two leading companies - United Therapeutics and eGenesis - to conduct revolutionary research in xenotransplantation.
As part of the program's first phase, six patients with end-stage kidney disease will get a chance at a new life. The study is planned to gradually expand to 50 participants. The first historic surgery by United Therapeutics is scheduled for mid-2025.
In parallel, eGenesis will conduct three pig kidney transplants.
An encouraging factor is a recent success: American Towana Looney has been living with a transplanted pig kidney for 61 days, setting a survival record after such surgery. Her condition remains consistently good.
