Named non-obvious cause of weight problems

Russian scientists have identified a direct link between sleep quality and weight problems.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to "Gazeta.Ru", insufficient sleep can become a key factor in the development of obesity.
Sleep specialist Dr. Maxim Novikov explained that during sleep, the hormonal balance responsible for feelings of hunger and satiety is regulated. With chronic sleep deprivation, the body increases the level of ghrelin - a hormone that stimulates appetite, while simultaneously decreasing the concentration of leptin, which is responsible for the feeling of fullness.
In addition, lack of sleep triggers the release of cortisol - the stress hormone, which further enhances cravings for high-calorie food. The tired body instinctively looks for quick sources of energy, leading to a preference for unhealthy food.
The specialist noted that the problem is exacerbated by reduced physical activity due to constant fatigue. Alongside this, chronic sleep deprivation slows down metabolic processes, which can lead to weight gain even while maintaining a usual diet.
For those who aim to normalize their weight, Novikov recommends first establishing a proper sleep schedule. The expert emphasized that the optimal duration of night rest for an adult is between seven and nine hours.
