Media: Iran is preparing for the resumption of conflict with the US and Israel
Iran believes that U.S. and Israeli ceasefire efforts are aimed solely at easing pressure on the markets and preparing for a new phase of hostilities.
This claim was made by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing unnamed officials and intelligence data.
According to the publication, Tehran believes that the current negotiations may be merely an "interlude before conflict," and that the signed memorandum "was likely an attempt by the U.S. and Israel to ease pressure on the global economy and buy time."
As the newspaper writes, Tehran's readiness to fight back points "to a deep mistrust that will likely prevent the two sides from reaching a lasting agreement for a swift end to the conflict."
The U.S. and Israel launched a military operation against Iran on February 28. In June, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding providing for an immediate cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including in Lebanon. However, on the night of July 8, the U.S. resumed large-scale strikes on Iran, accusing it of violating the agreements regarding the Strait of Hormuz. On August 2, U.S. President Donald Trump said he had agreed to cancel a planned massive strike on Iran in order to reach a deal with the Islamic republic. According to him, Tehran and Arab capitals asked the U.S. to refrain from the attack, as the parties had agreed on the outlines of a future agreement.
