39-year-old Arisbeth Munoz from San Diego (USA) had her arms and legs amputated due to a severe reaction to two common infections, reports the Daily Mail. She went to the hospital because of nausea and pain throughout her body.

Tests revealed that Munoz had influenza and group A streptococcus, bacteria that can cause tonsillitis, pharyngitis, acute respiratory infections, otitis, and other diseases. While being treated in the hospital, the woman developed sepsis. The publication claims that this was a manifestation of an excessive immune response - the body attacked its own healthy cells. One of the complications Munoz faced was necrotizing fasciitis, which refers to a subset of aggressive skin and soft tissue infections that cause necrosis of the muscle fascia and subcutaneous tissues. It is also known as the flesh-eating disease.

The patient's right leg had to be amputated below the knee, and the left leg above the knee. Doctors also amputated her right arm and the left hand. Medical staff connected Munoz to a ventilator to prevent lung failure and cardiac arrest.

In total, the woman spent five months in hospital treatment and was discharged in April 2025. Now she can breathe and eat independently.
